Sometimes you want to grab your things last minute and head out of the city for a night or two of camping to reconnect with nature and unwind. Unfortunately, many campsites (at least here in BC) are booked up months in advance, so it’s impossible to get a site last minute. You’re stuck trying to plan your camping trips so far in advance that you may be stuck with bad weather or other plans.  Is there another option? If you know where to find them, there are free, user-maintained campsites t...

The Rise in Designated Dispersed Camping There’s nothing quite like camping in the great outdoors. And while some campers prefer the amenities that can be found at a developed campground, which can range from flush toilets, showers and RV hookups to even swimming pools, playgrounds and other deluxe amenities, others prefer the freedom, solitude, adventure and spontaneity to be found in dispersed camping. In some cases it’s about necessity. With the increase in required reservations at state and ...

How to Prepare for Camping in the Rain I love to camp, but I live in the Pacific Northwest, where it is bound to rain, no matter the season. I actually prefer camping in late spring and early fall when campgrounds are less crowded, and there is no fire ban (campfires are the best part of camping, am I right?). I’ve spent a lot of time camping, and here are ...

When summer hits, everyone and their brother seems to head for the beach. If you love the sun, surf, and sand, but aren’t a fan of beach crowds, Cape Lookout National Seashore could provide the breathing space you’ve been searching for.  The northern portions of North Carolina’s Outer Banks, including Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, and Nags Head have blossomed into touristy destinations over the past few decades. If you want a wilder, natural, more private beach adventure, you’ll want to hea...

In March 2022, I embarked on a 10-day road trip across California, Nevada, and Utah with a group of friends. They were towing a new Winnebago off road travel trailer with their truck, while the rest of us camped in tents. Having a trailer really expanded our camping options, as we were able to take advantage of dispersed camping in several locations. It was an active trip of hiking, climbing, mountain biking, and exploring many of the geological wonders found along our route. Overall, it was a f...

When I was younger I thought camping was just sleeping in a tent at a campground. But, over the years, I’ve been able to find more adventures and have been able to explore many different types of camping. Here’s what I’ve experienced so far. Tent camping  The tried and true form of camping. I have so many fond memories of tent camping. Waking up and having my morning cup of coffee by the fire. Watching friends and family roll out of their tents as the world begins to wake up. Climbing back ...
